THE WHIP, HAMMER, AND THE CROSS
        TEXT:
        Isa 53:4-6
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (KJV)

        INTRODUCTION:
This is a dramatized sermon to show what it cost Jesus to pay for your sins.  As far as I know, Tommy Barnett of First Assembly of God in Phoenix, AZ was the first to preach this sermon. There have been numerous variations of it done both by Tommy and by others. This is not the complete text but is enough to give the general idea.

        I. THE CROWN OF THORNS (show the crown)
          1. They took a crown of thorns and forced it on his head
          2. They took a reed and hit the crown of thorns driving  the thorns
                into his brow

II. THE SCOURGING (show the whip)
          1. The Jewish method of "scourging," as described in the  Mishna, was by
the use of three thongs of leather, the  offender receiving thirteen stripes
on the bare breast  and thirteen on each shoulder, the "forty stripes save
                one,"  Vine's Expository Dictionary
          2. The straps had nails, bones, and thorns tied to them
          3. It's purpose was to tear, rip, and bring pain
          4. Often it would kill the victim

III. THE GUARD (use the whip on the cross as you preach this point)
          1. The Roman guards were often sadistic men who loved to  hear their
                victims scream, cry, and moan.
          2. The guard said,"I'll make this Jesus cry for mercy."
          3. He began to beat our Lord, not once but 39 stripes
          4. When they finished the blood mixed with flesh dripped  down the back
                of Jesus.
          5. Lesser men begged for mercy, but Jesus spoke not a word
          6. Pilate said, BEHOLD THE MAN.  What he meant was, this  guy is a
real man.  I knew he wouldn't cry for mercy  and I thought  I would
never see him again, but he's a real man.
          7. He took the accusations and he took the pain that he  might be able to
                identify with you and me.

IV. THE CROSS (stand up the cross and display it as you preach this point)
          1. Next they gave him a cross.
          2. Other men couldn't carry their cross but Jesus took his  cross and began to
                carry it up calvary's mountain.
          3. He fell beneath the load again and again.
          4. The women began to weep, but Jesus said,"don't cry for  me, weep for
                your sons and your daughters.
          5. The twentieth century has forgotten how cruel and  hideous crucifixion
really was. We have perhaps  unwisely and sometimes unconsciously
glamorized the  cross.  Jewelry and steeple alike are often ornamental
and attractive but carry nothing of the real story of  crucifixion. It was
the most  painful method of public  death

        V. CALVARY
          1. VINES - Greek - kranion ^2898^, (English - cranium)
            Latin - Calvaria
            Aramaic - Golgotha
            English - skull)
          2. Calvary or Golgatha is a hill shaped like a skull
          3. It was a place of shame, disgrace, and humiliation
          4. Only the worst criminals were sent to die on Calvary.
          5. It overlooks the entire city of Jerusalem.
          6. As he died on the cross he looked out over the city and  saw those whom
                he had come to save.
          7. They had now abandoned him

        VI. THE HAMMER
(beat the cross with the hammer when you tell of Jesus being nailed to it)
          1. They took Jesus and threw him on the cross
          2. They took those PRECIOUS HANDS
             a. That had healed the sick
             b. That had blessed the little children
             c. That had caused the blind to see
             d. That had raised the dead
          3. They drove huge spikes into each of those precious  hands and into the
                feet of Jesus
          4. Then they took that old RUGGED CROSS and held it up and dropped
it into its place, tearing his hands and  his feet.
          5. The cross was lifted and jarred into the ground,  tearing the flesh of the
crucified and racking his body with excruciating pain. Historians remind
us that even the soldiers could not get used to the  horrible sight, and
often took strong drink to numb their own senses."  Jesus endured 6
hours of such  anguish, just for us so that we might be forgiven of  all
                our sin!

VII. HIS DEATH (stand the cross up and lap your arms over it)
          A. HE WAS ABANDONED IN HIS DEATH
          1. There he was, GOD'S SON
          2. GOD'S BLOOD was flowing in his vains
          3. He cried for water and they gave him VINEGAR
          4. He came unto his own and his own abandoned him
                 a. Where were the lepers he had healed?
                 b. Where were the lame he had made to walk?
                 c. Where were the ones he had raised from the dead?
                 d. Where were the ones he had delivered from demons?
                 e. Where were the disciples He’d poured His life into?
                 d. Why is he hanging on the cross alone?

          B. HE REFUSED THE HELP OF THE ANGELS
          1. Why?
          2. They would have come to release him and set him free
          3. The Bible says there were 10,000 of them ready.
          4. In the Old Testament 1 angel killed a whole army
          5. They could have taken their King off of the cross.
          6. Why didn’t he call for them.

VIII. BECAUSE HE HAD COME TO PAY FOR OUR SINS
          1. Jesus cried, "Eli, Eli, lama sabacthani."
My God, my God, why hast thou FORSAKEN me?
          2. Then he cried with a loud voice and his spirit left him
          3. He died for you and me.
